There's no word on whether or not WWE did so in response to the reports as a last minute rewrite or if it was always the plan, but they promoted the surprise return as a "former WWE champion and cross-promotional multi-media star". That led many to believe it would be The Miz before the report got out that it was Jericho.
So, Justin Roberts made the big announcement and brought out The Miz to a mild reception. No one in the audience seemed to care and Miz told them they were wrong for it in a promo announcing he was back and better than ever, ready to reclaim his spot as a WrestleMania main eventer.
That's when the other shoe dropped, the pyro went off and they BROKE THE WALLS DOWN.
Jericho came out to a hero's welcome, light up jacket and all. The Miz was livid, saying he's a movie star, a box office draw, a true Hollywood superstar and he deserves better.
So Jericho hit him with a Codebreaker before grabbing the mic and saying "damn, that felt good!"
"I have been waiting a long time to say these words and I am going to say them right here, right now, tonight... WELCOME TO RAW ... IS ... JERICHO ..."
That's when the lights went out and The Wyatt Family appeared in the ring to put to boots to old "Y2J".
