The WWE’s biggest rival, TNA, has reportedly made a move to sign CM Punk, the wrestler who famously walked out of a January taping of WWE ‘Raw’ and never came back. WWE has the details of how TNA approached Punk:
This was done similarly to how they reached out to Alberto Del Rio, through an intermediary who is friends with Punk. The idea pitched was said to be a huge deal for Punk to be the top star of the company with pay similar to what Hulk Hogan was making. The idea is that Punk could be TNA’s flagship star and if he signs now, he could help get a strong TV deal.
News emerged earlier this summer that TNA was having trouble keeping SpikeTV interested in airing its programming. In August, the company confirmed that its Wednesday night program “Impact Wrestling” will only air on Spike TV through the end of the year.
“Negotiations remain ongoing beyond this time frame,” TNA President Dixie Carter said in a press release.
Signing Punk, one of pro wrestling’s biggest ratings draws, would certainly help propel the negotiations forward, and in TNA’s favor.
Punk reportedly dismissed the offer, however, and plans to remain retired, PWInsider (via WrestlingInc.com) reports.
TNA wrestling has not returned The Washington Post’s request to comment.
TNA has a history of signing ex-WWE stars, including Kurt Angle, Jeff Hardy, Hulk Hogan and, most recently, Brodus Clay, now known as Tyrus.
