Jimmy Uso finds himself without a partner and without a rudder unless WWE gets creative. His brother, Jey, is hurt. A shoulder injury is set to keep him out of action.
WWE announced on its official website, "Jey underwent surgery last week to tighten his rotator cuff and shoulder capsule." In the report,WWE's Dr. Stephen Daquino estimates that Jey will be out of action for "at least six months."
That's certainly bad news for both Usos, but Jimmy need not do as Curtis Axel did when Ryback went under the knife last year and just fade away. WWE can experiment with the tag team specialist's place on the show. Have him seek out a singles title, take on new partnerships or obsess over his enemy. Just make sure to keep his high-energy, gravity-defying style onscreen.
Answer the Challenge
One easy, short-term path to send Jimmy on is to have him emerge from the curtains during one of John Cena's open challenges for his United States Championship. This angle has seen Cena tangle with a babyface before. Dean Ambrose was the first man to try to wrest the title from Cena's hands after WrestleMania.
Putting Jimmy in that spot offers a fresh matchup, for one. Cena and Jimmy have both been faces for a long time and have yet to cross paths.
This is a chance for Jimmy to have a standout match of his own. He would look to use his speed to counter Cena's power. It's a bout with promise thanks to that juxtaposition in styles and both men's talent.
Have Jimmy push Cena and nearly nab the belt from him a few times. That clash is sure to be fun, and having Cena reeling during the bout will boost the former tag team champ.
Form Temporary Alliances
The tag team division wasn't deep even with The Usos around. Having Jimmy return there is smart, as it adds to WWE's booking options for its duos and puts Jimmy in the place where he most shines.
There is no replacing his twin brother, but there's a potentially engaging narrative to tell here.
Have Jimmy openly recruit a stand-in for Jey. He scouts possible partners by watching them from the announce desk. He approaches wrestlers after big wins, congratulating them and looking to woo them.
Pair him with a number of wrestlers over the next six months. He can team with Neville, Ambrose, Tyler Breeze and, for one night, The Bunny. Tension with the unstable Ambrose ends that partnership early. The Bunny is just a fun diversion. Should his team with Neville or another athletic dynamo start to gain popularity, WWE can just run with it. This is a time to throw together a bunch of new teams and see what sticks.
For guys who struggle for air time like Zack Ryder, teaming with Jimmy for a few bouts would benefit them thanks to added exposure.
This way, Jimmy has a story to help showcase himself, this tale of his struggle to find a teammate. If a partner does work out, there's an angle to play with when Jey gets back. Should Jimmy ditch Neville, The Man Who Gravity Forgot could use that rejection to start a feud with both brothers, for example.
And there would certainly be some memorable matches with some of those combos involved.
Seek Revenge
WWE has a ready-made impetus for Jimmy to seek a new partner—vengeance. In real life, Jey was already hurting when WrestleMania began, but the company sold the story that Cesaro flinging him into the announce table was what caused him to need surgery.
Looking to pay Cesaro back, Jimmy can either seek a new ally, as discussed above, or go it alone.
Much like when Hideo Itami continually stood up to The Ascension by himself only to get crushed each time, Jimmy can go after Cesaro and Tyson Kidd. Have the tag champs look powerful by throttling Jimmy each time out.
There are chances to have some exciting brawls here. It's easy to create empathy for the angry brother beat down by the merciless thugs.
Jimmy can help another team dethrone Kidd and Cesaro as a means of revenge. He can challenge them for the tag team titles in a Street Fight by his lonesome. He can begin to unravel as he fails to avenge his brother.
The options are plentiful. The story is already set up for WWE.
Any of these routes allow Jimmy to remain in the bright lights of Raw and SmackDown. In each case, he gets to deliver the exciting action he is known for. The one thing WWE can't do, though, is just push him aside and ask him to wait for his brother to get back.
While he and Jey go together like peanut butter and jelly, peanut butter on its own is still pretty damn good.
