When Damien Sandow aligned with The Miz last August, it was a move that many felt would see his career in WWE heading downhill, as opposed to making him a stronger character in the company.
After all, it's not long since Sandow was given the biggest push of his career to date, claiming the Money in the Bank briefcase before ultimately cashing it in unsuccessfully against John Cena.
A series of comedic impersonations and comedy segments were the precursor to his allegiance with The Miz, but it never really felt like the right move for Sandow.
However, with WWE fans buying into Sandow's adaptation of the Damien Mizdow character, the move turned out to be an overwhelming success. He and The Miz became WWE Tag Team champions together, but with Sandow's popularity outgrowing that of The Miz's on a weekly basis, it seemed inevitable that they would part ways.
So when it did finally happen at WrestleMania, it produced one of the biggest reactions of the night, even if Sandow's first ever face turn inWWE was limited to the pre-show.
However, fast forward almost a month, and WWE seems to be on the verge of completely dropping the ball when it comes to Sandow's momentum and popularity.
The way it executed the turn was nicely done and in doing it on the biggest show of the year, it indicated it was serious about givingSandow another push in WWE. What we should have seen the following night on Raw was the Sandow character returning, with hisMizdow gimmick being confined to the annals of history.
That character has seriously run its course now. Whilst all the parodying and imitating of The Miz was a great train to get him over with WWE fans, he's now not really needing that anymore. He should be his own man again and go back to the Damien Sandow character that has a lot going for it.
Even though the Sandow gimmick has never worked as a face, it's a great platform from which to go from here. The fans are buying into him still, even if WWE is persisting with keeping him as Mizdow.
However, should it go on and on for a few more weeks, there's a danger all the work done in pushing Sandow will be lost forever. Having him come out to The Miz's entrance music, perform The Miz's moves and generally act like The Miz is redundant now; we've established that he's split from The Miz, so for the feud to work, it needs to be two contrasting characters, not The Miz versus his stunt double.
We've seen in the past that DamienSandow is a captivating and entertaining guy. Not just in the ring, but on the microphone too. WWE needs to entrust Sandow and believe in his talents as his own man.
After all, he's proven he can pull off a gimmick that involves basically copying another star. Imagine the success he'll have if he's given a platform of his own and his old character once again.
