WWE Superstar John Cena won the WWE United States Championship at WrestleMania 31, beating then champion Rusev. He not only took the Bulgarian Brute’s title, but he also ended his undefeated streak. This was the second year in a row that a streak ended at WrestleMania, which is a strange but true fact. One might have been bigger than the other, but that is a story for another article.
Cena decided that he would make the U.S. Title mean something again, which is why he wanted to put the title on the line each week in an open challenge to anyone in the back. Interesting names have come out to accept the challenge, such as Dean Ambrose and Bad News Barrett. Many fans have started to gain more respect for Cena. Not only is Cena not in the main event each week, but he is putting on the best matches each week during the U.S. Title matches.
For a man who many consider to be a bad wrestler, he has wrestled several people and given us quality matches, proving that he can work with anyone seemingly and look good. So can we say that Cena was carried by better wrestlers his entire career or has he proven now that he was as good as the others were, just in different ways?
While John Cena is set to face Rusev this Sunday at WWE Extreme Rules in a Russian Chain Match for the United States Championship, it does not appear he is going to lose the title any time soon. According to Cageside Seats, due to the reception of Cena’s title matches on WWE programming each week it does not look like the company wants to stop doing them. Cena will probably retain the U.S. Title for a while.
Many believe that eventually the well will run dry with main roster talent for Cena to face. That could mean the appearance of someone from NXT, who would then beat him for the U.S. Title to help them get over for a while. Of course, this is only a rumor as of now. However, we could very well see this. The only thing for sure right now at least is that John Cena will hold on to the WWE United States Championship for a while. How long he does so is yet to be determined.
