“ONE Championship 27: Warrior’s Quest” took place today with a pair of title fights anchoring the event, which took place at Singapore Indoor Stadium in Kallang, Singapore.
In the evening’s main event, Shinya Aoki (38-6) successfully defended his One Championship lightweight title, winning a unanimous decision over Koji Ando (11-4-2).
Aoki got the fight to the floor in the opening round, working from top position. Ando managed to avoid much immediate danger and kept Aoki from passing into dominant positions, but did eat several elbows near the end of the round.
Round 2 saw the action slow to a crawl with the fighters standing at distance and trading kicks and jabs. Ando was able to land jabs with at least enough regularity to draw blood from the nose of Aoki. Neither man was exhibiting enough offense for the referee, however, and he continually pestered the fighters to up their activity levels.
The action went back to the ground in Round 3, with Aoki patiently working for a takedown and eventually finding himself on top of Ando once again. The top game of Aoki was much more effective this time around as he worked to mount. Aoki did a lot of damage in the round with elbows to the face of Ando. Aoki attempted an armbar late in the round but was unable to finish the hold, instead switching back to elbows and hammerfists to bust up the face of Ando.
Ando had little success in the championship rounds. Aoki alternated between clowning and working for takedowns. By the end of Round 5, Aoki was butt scooting after a failed takedown attempt to laughter from the crowd while a dejected Ando was unable to do anything that could win him the fight.
The win was Aoki’s eighth in a row. He has not lost since a TKO loss to Eddie Alvarez in April 2012.
Ando came into the bout riding his own impressive fight-fight winning streak. This was only his second loss in the last five years.
Strange ending doesn’t get in way of Dejdamrong Sor Amnuaysirichoke winning strawweight title
Dejdamrong Sor Amnuaysirichoke captured the inaugural One Championship strawweight title with a clear-cut unanimous decision over Roy Doliguez (6-2).
Dejdamrong spent Round 1 doing a brilliant job of fending off the takedown attempts of Doliguez. The muay Thai practitioner even managed to transition from stuffing takedowns to taking full mount. Doliguez was rewarded for his effort in the round with a cut near his left eye.
Doliguez had success in Round 2 with getting the fight to the ground but was unable to do much with top position. When the fight was on the feet it was still Dejdamron who was able to score with elbows and knees to the head and body. The fight appeared to be slipping away from Deliguez quickly as the round came to a close.
Dejdamrong dominated the rest of the fight. He routinely began to counter the takedown attempts of Doliguez by bumping directly into mount as the striking exchanges on the feet slanted wildly in the direction of Dejdamrong.
In Round 4, Doliguez was poked in the eye early in the round and took a kick to the cup moments later. With multiple fouls against Dejdamrong having been called already, Doliguez took a completely legal forearm to the forehead and stepped away, asking the referee for a “timeout.” The referee called a halt to the bout, leading to a whirlwind of confusion before an announcement that the fight would move to the cards for a technical decision.
As there was no foul, it should have been a TKO if Doliguez was unable to continue. Despite the bad administration that led to the scorecards being utilized, Dejdamrong got his hand raised as the unanimous decision winner to become the first ever One Championship strawweight champion.
Gafurov makes quick work of Ting
Marat Gafurov (11-0) wasted no time proving his superiority on the cage against Ev Ting (9-3).
The undefeated featherweight landed a hard counter body kick to open the fight before pushing Ting into the cage and scoring with a takedown.
Once the fight hit the ground it was open season on the ribs of Ting. Gafurov threw heavy punches, elbows and hammerfists from the top while looking to improve his position. With Ting looking to escape the crushing top game of Gafurov it left an opening for his back to be taken.
Once Gafurov had an opening to sink in the rear-naked choke, he pounced, forcing the tap at 4:30.
Tynanes neutralizes Khamitov’s wrestling game
Lowen Tynanes (7-0) was able to wear down and demoralize Kuat Khamitov (18-4-1) over three rounds of action to take a unanimous decision in their lightweight bout.
Utilizing his wrestling to control Tynanes was Khamitov’s blueprint for victory. Unfortunately for Khamitov, it was Tynanes that seemed to win nearly every wrestling exchange over the three rounds of action.
Khamitov struggled to score takedowns from Round 1, repeatedly being foiled by the sprawl of Tynanes. Once he established his ability to stay on the feet, Tynanes began to pepper Khamitov with strikes.
Round 2 was not much different from the previous, except that Tynanes upped the output of his striking and scored with his own takedowns. Tynanes’ attack began to incorporate a high volume of leg kicks while continuing to succeed with stuffing the takedown attempts of Khamitov.
Khamitov’s cardio became an issue in Round 3 as Tynanes continued to mix up his attack but also scored takedowns at a higher volume. Much of the final frame was spent with Tynanes on top on the ground and Khamitov unable to do much aside from briefly escape back to his feet on a few occasions only to be taken down again.
Tynanes remains undefeated with the win and has picked up three wins in ONE Championship action, something that might move him toward a title shot.
The loss snapped a six-fight winning streak for Khamitov.
Ariel Sexton dominates Eddie Ng in surprising fashion
Ariel Sexton (10-3) made a case for a lightweight title shot with a rear-naked choke submission of Eddie Ng (7-3) at the 1:10 mark of Round 2.
Sexton landed some cracking uppercut counters in Round 1 and almost finished the fight in the opening frame with a topside triangle choke. Ng was saved by the bell that time, but Sexton was able to score another takedown and quickly pass to full mount. Sexton utilized the advantageous position to take Ng’s back and lock in the rear-naked choke for the victory.
Shannon Wiratchai (4-1) and Amir Khan (3-2) battled for three rounds in featherweight action. Both men had moments where it appeared they were taking over the fight. The judges were split when the competitive contest hit the scorecards, but it was Wiratchai who had his hand raised as the split decision victor.
Angela Lee (1-0) kicked the main card off with a dominant performance against Aya Saeid Saber (3-6). Lee wasted no time in the opening frame, taking Saber down and working her opponent over with strikes before transitioning to an armbar and getting the tap at the 1:43 mark of Round 1. The win was the bantamweight’s first in her pro career.
