Kevin Owens may become the number one heel of WWE soon he also has made a major impact on WWE programming. The NXT champion has bullied his way onto a roster filled with top-notch talent and he has fit right in, taking on John Cena and beating him at his own game.
But Cena's spot is not the only thing that's come under fire from Owens. Seth Rollins' place as the company's top heel is in jeopardy thanks to Owens' work on TV.
Owens is an old-school heel in every sense of the word. He's vicious, unapologetic and completely fearless. He uses his strength and intensity to intimidate anyone standing in his path, and the more chaos he can create, the happier he is.
Owens is a great villain because he does not know he's a villain. He condones his actions by reminding fans he has a family to support; totally ignoring the potentially dangerous example his character is setting for his own young son. In Owens' mind, it's just business and nothing else.
While fans of NXT hold tremendous respect for Owens and often tend to give him a positive reaction, the same cannot be said of WWE's main crowds. The Raw and SmackDown audiences see how brutal Owens is, and they respond as they should. Owens has quickly become one of the company's best heels and is only getting better.
It's only a matter of time until he overtakes Rollins' as WWE's primary antagonist, and that day may be coming sooner rather than later.
Rollins is the smug and smarmy champion, the entitled Superstar with WWE's corporate power structure behind him. He is fully aware of the hate he receives, and he justifies it by blindly following The Authority as if they own his soul. He hides behind his benefactors and blames everyone else when he comes up short in the ring.
Rollins' act of betrayal against The Shield remains the defining moment in his heel run, as the crowd has never been able to forgive him for that. Rollins is unquestionably WWE's top antagonist, and he is firmly established in that role.
But the more work Owens does, the more that role is in doubt. He has done more to be hated in a shorter amount of time than anyone has in a while, and if he keeps this up, his heel pop will rival and eventually pass Rollins'.
The key for Owens is momentum. Beating Cena at the Elimination Chamber was just the first step for him, a step that had to be taken for him to succeed on WWE's main roster. Very few guys go over on Cena and those that do can go on to do bigger things but it cannot stop there.
Owens must beat Cena at Money in the Bank. Despite how he wins, the fact is he must. Cena has to be on his back in a lot of pain at the end of the bout and Owens must be standing over him, mocking him the entire time. It reinforces the notion that Owens is in control of the situation and that he is indeed a force to be reckoned with.
It also drives home the point he is a dangerous man who took out the company's top star, and he did it twice in a row with relative ease.Fans must hate Owens, they must boo him out of the building, and he must be completely comfortable with that. He must be the guy willing to take all of the vitriol and contempt and redirect it back at the crowd giving it to him.
The more he does it and the more he wins, the more his star will shine.
Owens has a lot of spotlight on him right now, as fans all over the world are beginning to recognize how good he is and understand his propensity for doing bad. The bigger he becomes, the more likely he will begin to overtake Rollins as the company's top heel.
