RFA 26 results for 5 June 2015 Gilbert Smith taps out Benjamin Smith to take Welterweight Title ,In the third round of the RFA 26 welterweight title main event, when Benjamin Smith tried to push off the cage and reverse position on Gilbert Smith, Gilbert snatched his arm, cranked, waited for the tap – and then got the 170-pound title wrapped around his waist. Gilbert, a UFC and “TUF 17″ veteran, got the tapout at the 3:27 mark of the third frame.
RFA 26 took place at 1STBANK Center in Broomfield, Colo. The main card aired on AXS TV.
The champ and challenger mostly negated each other with standup wrestling in the first round. But midway through, Gilbert Smith got too deep inside and Benjamin tossed him and tried to go to work on the ground. But Gilbert reversed position and took Benjamin’s back on the feet and had 90 second with which to work. He landed a takedown, then tried to take Benjamin’s back – but was too high, and Benjamin won some momentum.
In the second, Benjamin was able to take control from on top on the ground – though he wasn’t doing any noticeable damage to Gilbert. Benjamin was in tough position to go after an armbar, but he stayed after it despite being against the fence. he couldn’t get it, though, and Glibert got back to his feet with 90 seconds left. But Benjamin dragged him right back down and closed out the round on top.
In the third, Gilbert started to turn things his direction and controlled Benjamin on top. But after Benjamin tried to reverse position, Gilbert took his left arm and rolled with it – and that was all she wrote. Benjamin quickly had to tap to the straight armbar, and RFA had a new welterweight champion.
Gilbert Smith (11-4) got back in the win column after a loss to Chidi Njokuani in January. Benjamin Smith (14-3) had his six-fight winning streak snapped.
