The UFC machine chugged on Saturday night with their last show of 2014, headlined by former champions Lyoto Machida and Renan Barao. UFC Fight Night 58 was the company’s first event in Bareuri, Brazil, and finished off a year that saw cards decimated by injuries.
#-4 Ranked Lyoto Machida returned to his winning ways over 10th ranked CB Dollaway with a quick first round knockout. A beautiful left body kick folded Dollaway over, and Machida ran right after Dollaway with punches. Shortly thereafter the action was stopped, with Machida earning the victory. After the fight, UFC President Dana White seemed prepared to book Machida against another top contender, Luke Rockhold.
Former UFC Bantamweight champion Renan Barao competed for the first time since losing his championship earlier this year, #14-ranked Mitch Gagnon. The fight itself was drawn out and uneventful until the third round when Barao scored an arm-triangle victory. After the fight, Barao declared his desire to reclaim the 135-pound title.
Elsewhere on the card, light heavyweight Patrick Cummins won his third straight fight in the UFC, while Hacran Dias scored an upset victory over #13-ranked Darren Elkins. Performance of the night bonuses of $50,000 went to Machida, Barao, Vitor Miranda, and Erick Silva.
